Aiming for a Circular Economy in Battery Production

The agreement includes collecting, packaging, transporting, and recycling batteries across various European countries, including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. After collection, BASF will mechanically process the batteries into 'black mass', from which essential raw materials like nickel, cobalt, and lithium are extracted and reclaimed for new battery production.

BASF recently constructed a battery material production and recycling facility in Schwarzheide, Germany. This facility is designed to serve the entire value chain of battery recycling. With this, BASF aims to establish a comprehensive battery recycling value chain in Europe, providing the battery industry with recycled metals that have a low CO2 footprint.
